History & Explanation

Palo Santo, holy wood or holy stick. The wood comes from a sacred tree, the Bursera Graveolens. You can find this tree in the coastal areas of Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

Palo santo means "sacred wood". In various cultures, the wood of this tree has been used in a traditional way for many centuries in ceremonies, rituals and religious activities. Indigenous South American peoples treat the wood of the Palo santo with great respect and reverence and attribute many medicinal properties to it.

The shamans use Palo santo wood in countless healing and purification rituals. These provide a spiritual purification of body, mind and soul.

Palo santo is burned, releasing a sweet, warm scent that amplifies the vibration of the air and is said to provide a deeper connection to the source, leading to a deep, meditative state.

The Incas, Mayas, Criollos and countless other indigenous peoples used Palo santo to drive away evil spirits and attract good luck, health and prosperity. An old, well-known Ecuadorian proverb says “Palo santo for cleaning your house and attracting good luck”.

The fire

Palo santo has a warm, sweet, soft scent that has a mood-enhancing effect. The scent is soothing and brings a peaceful, warm atmosphere. Palo santo brings peace to depression, tension and negative feelings. Positive feelings are stimulated.

Because the scent has a calming effect and improves concentration, it is an excellent support for study and other activities that require concentration and focus. The scent of Palo santo is also a wonderful accompaniment for meditation, yoga or quiet reading.

Usage

Light one end of the stick, let it burn for a few seconds and then blow out the flame. Let it glow further and blow the smoke over your body or the objects you want to ritually cleanse, such as a room, your entire house or car. Palo Santo gives off a light, sweet scent that resembles Frankincense or Neroli incense. Most people can feel the beneficial cleansing effects immediately

To enhance the scent, you can hold a flame to the wood again and repeat the procedure. Note: the first time you light a piece of wood, it takes longer to glow properly.

You can also walk through a room with a glowing stick to spread the scent. Repeat as desired. With daily use, the room will fill with warmth and tranquility.

As an amulet

Palo santo wood is also traditionally worked and worn as an amulet. It protects against evil influences and gives peace. Children with nightmares are given a piece of Palo santo wood to bed, so that they can sleep peacefully and have no bad dreams.
