Moldavite is a form of Tektite that was formed when a giant meteorite hit Earth in southern Germany nearly 15 million years ago. The speed and heat of the impact shattered the target rock and scattered molten fragments over areas of southern Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. The splashes evaporated quickly, condensed into a molten liquid, and then solidified into pieces of glass, trapping gases inside the glass and not allowing time for mineral crystals to form. It is alien material essentially combined with rock from Earth.
